The University of the Witwatersrand has, as one of its most valuable and prestigious heritage and research assets, the holdings of the priceless Historical Papers collections.
Historical Papers is the main humanities archival research resource on campus.
It is also the largest non-state archive in Southern Africa and it is uniquely positioned within the South African heritage sector.

Archival material is arranged by the name of the individual or organisation to which they relate.
Finding Aids
A series of four guides have been prepared. Historical Papers, Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Photographs, Audio and Audio Visual Collections, these are available to browse or search online or to download in pdf format.
Searchability
The online archive can be browed or searched online via the Wits Research Archive. Users can browse and search by keyword across all collections in the multi-institutional repository, or within individual collections. Results can be narrowed by: Archival Institution, Creator, Name, Place, Subject, Level of description, and Media Type. An Advanced Search function allows users to filter by field: Title, Archival History, Scope and Content. Users can also choose to limit information to Repository and Top Level Description or filter results by y: Level of Description, Digital Object Available, Finding Aid, Copyright Status, All Top Level or Descriptions, and Date Range, Extent and Medium, Subject Access Points, Name Access Points, Place Access Points, Genre Access Points, Identifier, Access Code, Digital Object Text, Creator, Finding Aid Text, and Any Text Except Finding Aid.

Historical Papers is a research archive. Researchers are asked to provide information about their research topic and the purpose of the research and to agree to the Terms and Conditions Copyright notice which states that "All materials used are protected by South African copyright law and may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, displayed, or otherwise published in any format, without prior agreement and/or written permission of the copyright owner."
